Folks, the Hygiene Grade for Utsav Indian restaurant in NYC is out.

B

Yes, it is a shameful B.

Utsav is a B Grade Indian restaurant, according to the wise souls at New York City Health Department.

Utsav Indian restaurant (Located at 1185 Avenue of Americas at W.46th St near Times Square) received the shameful B Grade on April 28, 2011.

Readers of this fine blog may remember that we wrote Utsav’s hygiene grade is pending after it received a whopping 40 Violation Points in March 1, 2011 health inspection.

While issuing the shameful B Grade to Utsav, the NYC Health Department’s report cited among other things:

Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.

Much to the dismay of Indian food lovers, we note that Utsav in Times square is plagued by mice problems as eight consecutive inspection reports of NYC Health Department from 08/21/2008-03/01/2011 raised the issue of mice problems at Utsav facility’s food and/or non-food areas.


Utsav NYC – B Grade on Hygiene

Here is the complete list of Sanitary Violations at Utsav that the NYC Health Dept cited while issuing a B Grade to this restaurant on April 28, 2011 in its inspection report showing 20 Violation Points  (Critical Violations in red color):


1) Hot food item not held at or above 140º F.

Utsav NYC Review – Below Average Food; Poor Service

Utsav Indian restaurant (Located at 1185 Avenue of Americas at W.46th St near Times Square) continues to be plagued by mice issues.

For the eighth time in a row, in its inspection of Utsav Indian restaurant (latest instance on March 1, 2011) the New York City Health Department has found:

Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.

That is right.

Every single NYC Health Dept inspection report of Utsav Festive India restaurant from 08/21/2008-03/01/2011 cites mice issues.


Utsav NYC – Plagued by Mice Issues

Utsav, NYC received 40 Violation Points in the March 1, 2011 NYC Health inspection.

Besides the evidence of mice or live mice, the latest inspection of Utsav, NYC (conducted on 03/01/2011) found other sanitary violations like no facilities available to wash, rinse and sanitize utensils and/or equipment; facility not vermin proof; plumbing not properly installed or maintained et. al.

Utsav NYC Review – Below Average Food; Poor Service

Folks, every single inspection of Utsav at 1185 Avenue of Americas (at W.46th St) by the NYC Health Department since 2008 has found evidence of mice.

No kidding.

Seven consecutive inspections by the NYC Health Dept since 2008 and every single one has found evidence of mice or live mice at Utsav, which touts itself as offering Festive Indian cuisine.

Open any inspection report of NYC Health Dept. on Utsav since 08/21/2008 and you’ll find this critical violation listed:

Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.

How disgusting. How dirty. :(

WTF is the Utsav management doing to get a handle on the mice problem plaguing the restaurant. Obviously not enough because the restaurant is a serial offender.

We don’t know about you schmucks but we’d prefer to stay away from Indian restaurants that consistently show evidence of mice.

Utsav NYC Review – Below Average Food; Poor Service

Hygiene, it seems, is not a word found in desi restaurateur Nandita Khanna’s lexicon.

Nandita’s high-end Utsav Indian restaurant in New York City continues to be plagued by serious hygiene issues.

A recent NYC Health Dept inspection of Utsav (11/30/2009) brought up sewage disposal, adulterated food, live mice and vermin issues.

Yeeks.

Raw, cooked or prepared food at Utsav is adulterated, contaminated, cross-contaminated and/ or not discarded in accordance with HACCP plan, says the NYC Health Dept. after conducting an inspection of this Indian restaurant on November 30, 2009.

Also, Utsav Festive India restaurant facility is not vermin proof, harborage or conditions conducive to vermin infestation exist and there is evidence of, or live mice in facility’s food and/ or non-food areas, according to the NYC Health Dept. Continue Reading..

Nandita Khanna, do you have no shame at all for running one of the filthiest and crappiest Indian restaurants a.k.a Utsav in New York City.

Eeks, even by the abysmal standards of crappy Indian restaurants in NYC, Nandita’s Utsav stands out for all the wrong reasons.

Utsav, the Indian restaurant that Nandita manages in midtown Manhattan (close to Times Square), serves not merely crappy food (if you go by our dining experience) but is also one of the dirtiest (if you go by several NYC Health Department Inspection Reports).

Worse, Utsav repeatedly keeps failing the NYC Health Dept inspections (failed on Oct 27, 2009, failed on Sep 11, 2009, failed on Aug 21, 2008). Continue Reading

 

Utsav NYC Review – Below Average Food; Poor Service

Utsav Festive India Restaurant located in MidTown West Manhattan near Times Square has failed the New York City Department of Health inspection conducted on September 11, 2009.

In its inspection of September 11, 2009, the NYC Health Dept. found that the food at Utsav, a NYC Indian restaurant, is not protected from potential source of contamination during storage, preparation, transportation, display or service.

Utsav Festive India Restaurant located at 1185 on Avenue of Americas in Midtown West Manhattan received a whopping 56 Violation Points in its September 11, 2009 inspection and failed the NYC Health Dept. inspection. Continue reading »

 

Utsav NYC Review – Below Average Food; Poor Service

Utsav, a New York Indian restaurant that we’d prefer to forget given our unpleasant dining experience there, is still not vermin proof and there is evidence of mice or live mice in the facility’s food and/or non-food areas, says the New York City Department of Health after it inspected the restaurant on November 17, 2008.

Utsav Festive India Restaurant located in MidTown West Manhattan near Times Square in New York City received 21 Violation Points, an improvement over the 39 Violation Points this lousy Indian restaurant received in the previous inspection of August 21, 2008.

A NYC restaurant needs a score of 27 or less to pass the NYC Health Dept inspection. Utsav passed the latest restaurant inspection by receiving 21 points.

Sanitary Violations observed at Utsav during the November 17, 2008 inspection:

1.) Other general violation.
2.) Non-food contact surface improperly constructed. Unacceptable material used. Non-food contact surface or equipment improperly maintained.
3.) Lighting inadequate. Bulb not shielded or shatterproof.
4.) Pesticide use not in accordance with label or applicable laws. Prohibited chemical used/stored. Open bait station used.
5.) Facility not vermin proof. Harborage or conditions conducive to vermin exist. Continue reading »

 

Utsav NYC Review – Below Average Food; Poor Service

Utsav Festive India Restaurant located in MidTown West Manhattan near Times Square has failed the NYC Health Dept. inspection conducted on August 21, 2008.

In its inspection of August 21, 2008, the New York City Department of Health found evidence of flying insects or live flying insects, evidence of roaches or live roaches, evidence of mice or live mice in the facility’s food and/or non-food areas.

The New York City Department of Health also determined that Utsav Festive India Restaurant is not vermin proof.

Utsav NYC Review – Below Average Food; Poor Service

Utsav Festive Indian Restaurant received 20 violation Points but passed the inspection conducted by the New York City Department of Health on September 6, 2007.

A NYC restaurant needs a score of 27 or less to pass the NYC Health Dept inspection.

According to the NYC Department of Health inspection report of 9/6/2007, violations were cited in the following area(s) and those requiring immediate action were addressed.

Sanitary Violations observed at Utsav:

1.) Non-food contact surface improperly constructed. Unacceptable material used. Non-food contact surface or equipment improperly maintained.
2.) Lighting inadequate. Bulb not shielded or shatterproof.
3.) Toilet facility not maintained and provided with toilet paper, waste receptacle and self-closing door.
4.) Facility not vermin proof. Harborage or conditions conducive to vermin exist.
5.) Evidence of flying insects or live flying insects present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.
6.) Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.

The NYC Department of Health said a Notice of Violation was not issued as a result of this inspection.
