Something is seriously wrong with Utsav NYC Indian restaurant (located near Times Square).

For the ninth consecutive time at Utsav (latest instance on July 27, 2011), the New York City Health Department has found:

Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.

Every single NYC Health Dept. inspection report of Utsav Indian restaurant from 08/21/2008 to 07/27/2011 cites mice issues.

What is the Utsav owner/manager doing?

Utsav – High Violation Points Score

As if the repeated citation over mice issues were not bad enough, Utsav NYC scored a disgustingly high 46 violation points in the July 27, 2011 NYC health inspection.

Critical Violations at Utsav NYC

The NYC Health Dept.’s inspection report of July 27, 2011 cites hygiene problems galore at Utsav:

* Personal cleanliness inadequate. Outer garment soiled with possible contaminant. Effective hair restraint not worn in an area where food is prepared.
* Food not cooled by an approved method whereby the internal product temperature is reduced from 140º F to 70º F or less within 2 hours, and from 70º F to 41º F or less within 4 additional hours.
* Cold food item held above 41º F (smoked fish and reduced oxygen packaged foods above 38 ºF) except during necessary preparation.
* Appropriately scaled metal stem-type thermometer or thermocouple not provided or used to evaluate temperatures of potentially hazardous foods during cooking, cooling, reheating and holding.
* Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.

By the way all the above mentioned sanitary violations including the mice issues are marked as critical and in red color by the NYC Health Department’s inspection report of July 27, 2011.

Other Violations at Utsav NYC

Besides the above critical violations, the latest NYC Health Dept. inspection of Utsav found other sanitary violations like facility not vermin proof, food contact surface not properly maintained, non-food contact surface improperly constructed etc.

Impact on Utsav Hygiene Grade

As per the NYC Health Dept. guidelines, an inspection score of 0-13 is an A, 14-27 points gets a B, and restaurants with 28 or more points are handed a C.

Since the new sanitary violation points score is 46, Utsav may likely get a downgrade from existing B-Grade to a C-Grade unless it appeals and gets some points knocked off.

Utsav Indian restaurant at 1185 Avenue of Americas at W.46th St near Times Square was issued a shameful B-Grade by NYC Health Dept. on April 28, 2011.
