Folks,  Surya NYC Indian restaurant in West Village Manhattan suffers from two distressing issues.

The first recurring problem at Surya NYC is evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.

Yeeks!

Folks, in all of the four New York City Health Department inspections conducted at Surya NYC over the last nine months, this Indian restaurant was found to have evidence of mice or live mice in its food and/or non-food areas.

* Evidence of mice or live mice on 5/25/2011.

* Evidence of mice or live mice on 4/07/2011.

* Evidence of mice or live mice on 9/22/2010.

* Evidence of mice or live mice on 8/19/2010.

Potential Food Contamination Issues at Surya NYC

The second frequent problem at Surya NYC is the potential food contamination issues.

Three out of the four NYC Health Department inspection reports on Surya NYC cite ‘food not protected from potential source of contamination during storage, preparation, transportation, display or service.’

* Food not protected from potential source of contamination during storage, preparation, transportation, display or service on 4/07/2011.

* Food not protected from potential source of contamination during storage, preparation, transportation, display or service on 9/22/2010.

Besides the mice and potential contamination issues, Surya NYC’s latest health inspection report (5/25/2011) also mentions other problems like facility not vermin proof, food contact surface is not properly washed et. al

Here is the full list of Sanitary Violations observed at Surya NYC during the May 25, 2011 inspection:  (Critical Violations in red color):

1) Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.
2) Food not protected from potential source of contamination during storage, preparation, transportation, display or service.
3) Food contact surface not properly washed, rinsed and sanitized after each use and following any activity when contamination may have occurred.

4) Facility not vermin proof. Harborage or conditions conducive to attracting vermin to the premises and/or allowing vermin to exist.
5) Non-food contact surface improperly constructed. Unacceptable material used. Non-food contact surface or equipment improperly maintained and/or not properly sealed, raised, spaced or movable to allow accessibility for cleaning on all sides, above and underneath the unit.
6) Proper sanitization not provided for utensil ware washing operation.

Surya NYC Loses its A Grade

Surya NYC in West Village of Manhattan received 26 Violation Points in its May 25, 2001 NYC health inspection.

As if the chronic mice, food contamination issues and overall high violation points are not enough, Surya NYC’s  A Grade has been replaced with a “Grade Pending” notation in the May 25, 2011 inspection report.

Update

Surya NYC on Bleecker St has been issued a B Grade by the NYC Health Dept based on the May 25, 2011 inspection  report.
