Folks, a new rat-hole has opened up in the Indian business district of Jackson Heights in Queens.
And it goes by the name of Tawa Tandoor.
Following a recent inspection of this Indian restaurant, the New York City Health Department has put out an inspection report that Tawa Tandoor located at 37-56, 74th St in Jackson Heights has evidence of rats or live rats present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.
Besides rats, the January 3, 2011 report of NYC Health Dept. cites other sanitary violations like inadequate personal cleanliness, outer garment soiled with possible contaminant, effective hair restraint not worn in an area where food is prepared, facility not vermin proof etc. etc.

Here is the complete list of Sanitary Violations at Tawa Tandoor, according to the NYC Health Dept’s January 3, 2011 inspection report (Critical Violations in red color):
1) Cold food item held above 41º F (smoked fish and reduced oxygen packaged foods above 38 ºF) except during necessary preparation.
2) Evidence of rats or live rats present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.
3) Personal cleanliness inadequate. Outer garment soiled with possible contaminant. Effective hair restraint not worn in an area where food is prepared.
4) Facility not vermin proof. Harborage or conditions conducive to attracting vermin to the premises and/or allowing vermin to exist.
Though Tawa Tandoor received 24 Violation Points in its January 3, 2011 inspection, the restaurant’s is not graded and has yet to go through the NYC Health Dept’s graded inspection.
Tawa Tandoor is not the only Indian restaurant in Jackson Heights facing rats problem.
Recently, Tawa Tandoor’s 74th St neighbor Delhi Heights was also found to have evidence of rats or live rats.
