Sapphire NYC Review – No Sapphire This; Poor Value for Your Money

Most Indian restaurants in NYC are notoriously unhygienic.

Sapphire Indian restaurant located at 1845 Broadway (near Lincoln Center) is one of the egregious, serial offenders when it comes to poor hygiene.

Folks, over the last 16 months, every single inspection of Sapphire by the New York City Health Department has found:

Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.

No kidding.

Five consecutive inspections by the NYC Health Dept from 08/26/2009 to 12/21/2010 have found evidence of mice.

If that is not a horrible track record of poor hygiene, we’d like to know what is.

WTF is the Sapphire management doing to address the problem, we’d like to know.

Bet you’d like to know too why every inspection of Sapphire for the last 16 months has found mice problems.

Disgusting!

It’s not as if Sapphire dishes up exotic Indian fare to die for.

No sir, no. Our dining experience at Sapphire was disappointing.

Sapphire – Struggling with Mice Problems

In addition to the critical violation of evidence of mice or live mice, the December 21, 2010 inspection report of the NYC Health Dept. on Sapphire cites other sanitary violations:
(Critical Violations in red color):

* Cold food item held above 41º F (smoked fish and reduced oxygen packaged foods above 38 ºF) except during necessary preparation.
* Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.
* Food contact surface not properly washed, rinsed and sanitized after each use and following any activity when contamination may have occurred.
* Sanitized equipment or utensil, including in-use food dispensing utensil, improperly used or stored.

* Facility not vermin proof. Harborage or conditions conducive to attracting vermin to the premises and/or allowing vermin to exist.
* Food contact surface not properly maintained.
* Plumbing not properly installed or maintained; anti-siphonage or backflow prevention device not provided where required; equipment or floor not properly drained; sewage disposal system in disrepair or not functioning properly.
* Non-food contact surface improperly constructed. Unacceptable material used. Non-food contact surface or equipment improperly maintained and/or not properly sealed, raised, spaced or movable to allow accessibility for cleaning on all sides, above and underneath the unit.
* Other general violation.

Sapphire on Broadway received a whopping 43 Violation Points in its December 21, 2010 health inspection.

Though Sapphire received 43 Violation Points in the December 21, 2010 inspection, the restaurant’s grade is pending as it likely has appealed to the Administrative Tribunal.

Date | Violation Points

12/21/2010 – 43
11/15/2010 – 41
04/27/2010 – 23
11/17/2009 – 26
08/26/2009 – 19
