What a mighty shame that Tiffin Wallah should get a C Grade in the NYC Health Department inspection.

Hygiene and NYC Indian restaurants rarely go hand in hand.

Not surprisingly, many Indian restaurants often fare very badly in restaurant inspections conducted by the NYC Health Department.

Folks, Tiffin Wallah located at 127 East 28th St and Lexington Ave in NYC is one such Indian restaurant that has fared badly  on the hygiene front in four consecutive inspections conducted in the last two months by the New York City Health Department.

Tiffin Wallah received 37, 22, 38 and 26 Violation Points in the last four inspections conducted on 11/30/2010, 11/23/2010, 11/4/2010 and 10/12/2010 respectively. A disgrace, if you ask us.

Tiffin Wallah – C Grade on Hygiene

Some of the hygiene violations that have cropped up at Tiffin Wallah in the last four consecutive inspections conducted by the the NYC Health Dept in the last two months include:

* No facilities available to wash, rinse and sanitize utensils and/or equipment.
* Food contact surface not properly washed, rinsed and sanitized after each use and following any activity when contamination may have occurred.
* Food contact surface not properly maintained.
* Proper sanitization not provided for utensil ware washing operation.
* Food not protected from potential source of contamination during storage, preparation, transportation, display or service.
* Cold food item held above 41º F (smoked fish and reduced oxygen packaged foods above 38 ºF) except during necessary preparation.
* Live roaches present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.
* Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.

Besides the live roaches, mice, food contact surface not properly washed, Tiffin Wallah also has the unique distinction of notching up some weird violations in all the last three consecutive health inspections (11/30/2010, 11/23/2010, 11/4/2010):

Failure to comply with an Order of the Board of Health, Commissioner, or Department.

Failure to comply with an order of the Board of Health? That doesn’t sound Kosher, does it.

We seldom hear of this kinda nonsense. What were these Tiffin Wallah bozos dreaming of achieving with such bizarre actions.

Folks, we have always been weary of Tiffin Wallah.  As we wrote in our review of this Lexington Avenue restaurant:

Cheap Prices. Cheap Quality. Cheap Service….

If price is your only criteria, Tiffin Wallah’s lunch buffet seems like a good deal. Well, at least until the first bite.

But if you are looking for a genuine Indian meal, surely there are lots of choices in Manhattan.

Tiffin Wallah is a remorseless Indian restaurant serving dollops of cheap food hoping that diners will be too awed by the cheap prices to notice the cheap quality.

Now that the Tiffin Wallah notched up a C Grade on hygiene front we can say that “Poor Hygiene” and “Cheap Food” rhyme well with each other.
