Remember Madras Cafe on Second Avenue in East Village area of NYC?

Madras Cafe (bet E 5th & E 6th St) was primarily a South Indian vegetarian restaurant with a few North Indian curries on its menu.

But the South Indian vegetarian restaurant positioning couldn’t save it.

No Sir, No.

Madras Cafe has been gone for more than a year now.

Does anyone even miss it?

If there’s one NYC Indian restaurant that deserves the epithet of shit-hole, it’s Satinder Sharma’s Brick Lane Curry House on E.6th St. in the East Village in Manhattan for its unhygienic conditions.

The restaurant often fares poorly in the NYC Health Department’s inspections.

In three out of the last four NYC inspections, this Indian restaurant has received a miserable 38 or more violation points.

Of late, the hygiene picture at Brick Lane Curry House has worsened with the restaurant receiving 49 and 43 points in two consecutive health inspections.

Whopping violation points received by Brick Lane Curry lately:

Sep 23, 2010 – 43 Violation Points
Aug 9, 2010  – 49 Violation Points

What a disgrace.

Brick Lane (E.6th St) - An Unhygienic Shit-Hole

Rats, Roaches, Horrible Scene
Some of the hygiene issues at Brick Lane Curry identified by the NYC Health Department in their last two inspections (September 23, 2010 and August 9, 2010) include:

* Live roaches in the facility’s food and/or non-food areas

* Evidence of rats or live rats present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas

* Facility is not vermin proof

* No facilities available to wash, rinse and sanitize utensils and/or equipment

* Hot food item not held at or above 140º F

* Hand washing facility not provided in or near food preparation area and toilet room

* Raw, cooked or prepared food is adulterated, contaminated, cross-contaminated, or not discarded in accordance with HACCP plan

Folks, we don’t know about you but we’d think twice, even thrice, before dining at Indian restaurants like Brick Lane Curry that are so careless about hygiene in their premises.

Hello, does anyone now remember Indo Munch on Lexington Avenue in the Murray Hill area of NYC?

Indo Munch (bet 31 & 32 St) was an Indian Chinese restaurant set up by Dinu Mullolli, an ambitious young fella from the South Indian state of Kerala.

With its Indian Chinese cuisine positioning, Indo Munch’s menu included items like Salt & Pepper Gobi, Vegetable Manchurian, Egg-Vegetable Fried Rice, Chilli Vegetable Noodles, Chicken in Hot Garlic,  et al.

Initially, the restaurant on Lexington Ave was only a la carte affair. Maybe that wasn’t enough to attract the crowds because Mullolli’s Indo Munch went the buffet route later.

But the restaurant still didn’t last long.

No Sir No. Mullolli pulled the shutters on Indo Munch and started an Indian vegetarian restaurant called Yogi’s Kitchen in the same location.

Indo Munch has been gone for more than a year now.

Does anyone even miss it?

By the way, here’s an excerpt from our review of Indo Munch:

Remind us to buy a hearing aid for our deaf waiter at Indo Munch.

Or maybe we should reserve our contempt for the restaurant’s inconsiderate chef. Continue reading »
