After the litany of failures, finally comes some good news:
June 3, 2009 – Chennai Garden passes the June 3, 2009 inspection by receiving 22 violation points (to pass the NYC Health Dept. inspection, a restaurant must receive 27 violation points or less).
But don’t uncork the champagne bottle yet because the food at Chennai Garden Indian restaurant located at 129 E 27th St in Murray Hill of NYC is not protected from potential source of contamination during storage, preparation, transportation, display or service, according to the New York City Health Department report of June 3, 2009.

The NYC Health Dept. inspection report of June 3, 2009 also noted that personal cleanliness is inadequate and that clean outer garments and effective hair restraint are not worn at Chennai Garden.
Sanitary Violations observed at Chennai Garden Indian restaurant during the June 3, 2009 inspection:
1.) Non-food contact surface improperly constructed. Unacceptable material used. Non-food contact surface or equipment improperly maintained.
2.) Food not protected from potential source of contamination during storage, preparation, transportation, display or service.
3.) Personal cleanliness inadequate. Clean outer garments, effective hair restraint not worn.
4.) Food worker does not use proper utensil to eliminate bare hand contact with food that will not receive adequate additional heat treatment.
The NYC Dept of Health said a Notice of Violation was not issued as a result of this inspection and that the violation point total received by Chennai Garden is above the average violation point total of 14 for all NYC restaurants on their most recent inspection.

When I ate at this place, both the Mysore masala dosa and the Gujrati thali had long hair in it. When I mentioned it to the waiter he offered to replace the item after we had eaten half the item and had lost our appetite.
All, stay away from this restaurant!
